How To Prepare For Kitten Season In Riverhead

  • Kitten season is the time of year when every unspayed, female cat is likely to have a litter of kittens. Due to this, it’s more important than ever to make sure that your cats are spayed & know what to do if you stumble upon a litter of kittens. It’s also a great time to adopt a kitten!
  • It’s very important that the finder assesses how/where the kittens were found, whether or not the mother cat is around, and how old the kittens are. For example, finding a litter of kittens in a box likely means that a human has left them there and the mother cat will not return. In this case, it is critical that these kittens be rescued and taken to a shelter. However, finding a litter of kittens near a bush or under one, your approach when finding a litter of kittens is to keep an eye on them to ensure that the mother cat is returning regularly to feed and care for the kittens.
  • This season is very important to all of us. We need to help our local rescues in their time of need as they are, most likely, at the end of their rope caring for many, many new mouths to feed and may be looking for a foster family or two to help and possibly adopt a new feline friend into their family in the process.
  • These are the ones that are lovingly called “Foster Failures”. We love them all for their dedication and love that they supply to these feline heartbreakers.
